What is the issue?

As Office 365 rolls out into the enterprise, often a forgotten component is the VDI\RDSH\XenApp environments. Generally, these environments are designed to be non-persistent, as we look at how to deal with the data components of O365, OST, Skype for Business Global Address List (S4B GAL), OneNote, and OneDrive, IT has been left with only a few options. Option 1, go online and deal with the user complaints, Option 2, cache everything local, this creates large repetitive downloads of data or user being bound to a particular machine, not very non persistent, or Option 3 put data on a network folder, this results in high IO, data corruption and performance issues. Now FSLogix has a solution that gives both IT and User the desired performance and persistence.

Windows® Profiles are a required part of every Windows desktop, whether physical or virtual.  They include everything from a user's vacation photos and desktop personalization, to critical application configuration information.  Without real-time access to profile data, users can have a terrible and sometimes unusable experience with their corporate workspace.  Depending on the user type, profiles can range in size from 50MB to 4GB and larger.  Often IT has to over-engineer on the File Storage side in order to get the performance to a useable level.

As anyone who has ever administrated Windows desktops knows, user profiles have been a major stumbling block to implementing virtual desktops whether Citrix XenApp or VDI. Over the years a variety of vendors have released products in an attempt to solve the problem. In the past, when storage was expensive, the main impetus of most profile vendors was to save disk space.  Causing the delayed user experience that has commonly been blamed on VDI/RDSH environments.

With today’s abundant solutions for storage optimization, storage is no longer the most expensive variable in the equation. Today, other hardware, such as file servers --along with the cost of IT administrative support -- consume the majority of budget.

It’s time for a new approach: Instead of placing all of the user’s files on a network share like in the redirected files approach, FSLogix encapsulates the entire profile --including the registry-- in an in-guest container. This has several benefits:

1. Eliminates the chance of a file server bottleneck.

In a typical redirected folders scenario, where a user’s files reside on a network share there occurs a situation such as at the beginning of the workday or just after lunch when all of the users attempt to logon at once. This “run on the bank” can create delays for the user while the file server attempts to service their request. In a typical redirected folders scenario, Windows must open each file on the desktop in order to extract the file name and icon. Because file opens are handled synchronously a server can quickly succumb to the stress of trying to handle all of the file open requests.

2. Eliminates the need for “Just-in-time” files copying.

Just in time delivery of files was important when disk space was expensive. Certain legacy profile management solutions attempt to delay the performance hit of downloading files until the exact moment the file is needed by a particular application.  

With newer technology we can now apply the correct solution to only stream the blocks of the file just in time when needed by the application.

3. Solves the problem of virtual applications running over the network.

Some applications such as ThinApp perform poorly over SMB. However, these applications when streamed via FSLogix perform very well.

4. Large files such as Outlook .OST file cause issues with legacy profile solutions. 

Copying the file down, either at logon or upon first use can cause considerable delays. Storing the file on a network share leads to poor performance whenever the file needs to be extended. Because an extension to any file is performed synchronously, delays can occur when other processes are waiting on the file extension to complete. By encapsulating the file within a container all file operations are handled at a lower level bypassing gating operations.  No other solution addresses this problem in RDSH/VDI, which is especially critical as more enterprises evolve to non-persistent implementations and move to cloud hosted Exchange solutions and Office 365.

Conclusion

Slow logon and application launch times are one of the top complaints in virtual desktops.  Legacy products and folder redirection add unnecessary network traffic and server utilization.  Additional management and configuration systems add complexity, but don’t address the root cause.

FSLogix advanced filtering approach removes the maximum amount of resource utilization from processing user profile data and eliminates the need for legacy profile products and folder redirection.  User profile performance is near-local, yet administrators receive the benefits of centralized profiles, including easy off loading for data retention and compliance, with little or no ongoing administration.

An Ongoing Need for Multiple Java Versions

A common requirement in Enterprise environments is the need to support multiple Java versions.  This generally occurs when IT needs to upgrade Java for security and interoperability reasons, but has applications or websites that require an older version of Java to function properly.  These applications and websites may not be easy or cost effective to update, or may be managed by third parties outside the control of the IT department.

Addressing Multiple Versions of Java

IT uses several methods to provide enterprise support for multiple Java versions, all with various challenges:

Presentation Server and VDI:  Using RDSH based solutions like XenApp or virtual desktop solutions like HyperV, administrators install applications requiring a common version of Java on a unique virtual client.  This provides a highly compatible environment for those applications, but requires additional resources and management to support, wasting valuable man-hours, hardware, and other system resources. Not to mention layers of complexity.  Applications running in VMs or remote servers may also lose their ability to interact with other desktop applications. (Isolation challenges)

Application Virtualization:  With Application Virtualization products such as Thinapp, App-V, and Symantec Workspace Virtualization (SWV or SVS), virtualized browser packages are created, containing the application or browser, plugins, and a unique version of Java.  Virtualized applications can require extensive and complex packaging and sequencing, and in some instances cannot operate in a virtual layer or bubble.  The variations in these components can require administrators to create and support a large number of packages simply to support common, industry standard desktops.  In addition, some consumers report as low as 60-80% success rate for virtualizing or isolating applications like Internet Explorer due to sequencing complexity with multiple plugins and Java versions.

Another common approach is to leave enterprise clients on the oldest version of Java that's compatible with their applications.  This creates compatibility issues for applications needing newer/latest versions of Java in order to function properly.  Security risks are an inevitable consequence of such an approach by allowing browsers to openly surf the web with older Java versions.

Java Redirection 

Starting with FSLogix Apps version 1.3, Java Redirection became a core feature module of the FSLogix Apps Suite, which is now comprised of Application/Image Masking, Java Redirection, Profile Containers, and Office 365 Containers.

The Java Redirection Module allows all applications and websites to run with the version of Java they require in order to operate properly – all within the same client system. 

After the initial setup is complete, end users automatically receive the appropriate Java version for their browser and applications without any intervention or notification.  Java redirection allows all required Java versions to be installed in the client environment, but only executed or visible on an as-needed basis, to maintain compatibility for specific applications and websites. Watch a demo video of a Citrix NetScaler Java fix using Java Redirection
